Introduction to Glass Fusing 1 with Renee Farr
Beginners this class is for you! Learn the basics of working with glass as you create preselected projects. This class will cover how to cut glass, what types of glass to use, volume and bubble control, heat and how it affects the result. If time permits students will create glass stringers and dots that can be used as embellishments on future projects.
Students are responsible for purchasing their own supplies as they are not included in the class fees. Supplies are available for purchase at the Cape Coral Art Center Supply Store located in building 2 open Monday thru Saturday 9:00am thru 4:00pm. Current students receive a 10% discount. Drop-In studio times are offered at a nominal fee for students enrolled in the current class session. Dates, times, and costs are posted in the glass studio after the first week of class in each session.
Supply List:
Students do not need to purchase any supplies before the first day of class. During the first class, students learn to cut glass using 2 different types of cutters.
By the second class, students need the following:
- Glass cutter
- Groziers
- Running Pliers
- Black magic marker
- Ruler with a cork back
- Thin Fire Kiln paper
- Fusible glass (generally purchased during the first day of class)
Optional Supply List:
- Small box or container to carry your glass and supplies to and from class
- Glasstac (preferably the glue gel) or similar glass glue
Class outline
Week 1 – Discussion on fusible glass, trip to the CCAC store to purchase glass for their first project, glass cutting on window glass
Week 2 – Begin cutting glass and assembling for their first project. Kiln shelf demo and preparation of shelves
Week 3 – Continuation of first project, discussion of volume control and bubbles
Week 4 – Firing their piece – getting them into the kiln, discussion on firing segments
Week 5 – Wrap up of class to include demo on creating stringers, display options, firing schedules and specialty cutting
The Art Center wants you to learn while having fun and staying safe! Please wear closed toed shoes and keep a pair of safety glasses and respirator handy.
